Lyrics

The Pride of the White Star Line
©2005 Jim Johnson (ASCAP)

We came from just north of Devonshire
when the famine took it’s hold.
Worked our way down Southampton port
with the little that we own.

An April wind – swept through that ship so high
as we quit the gray coastline.
And of our fortune –  she whispered not a hint
No, she never gave a sign.

(Chorus)
And we’ll leave it all up to fate
And we’ll leave it all behind
And we’ll sail - on the pride - of the White Star Line

Some walked with wealth or carried fame
in the shadow of the mast.
Most of us just packed our unknown names
and stayed down in third class.

Worked six years on that farm, but failed
back home in county Cork.
It’s dark in the belly of this whale
and we’re eight days from New York.

The floors below all screamed, then they cried,
when it ripped her from the side.
And the walls began to lean, and then divide,
when she left the ice behind.

Some they worked to save, while the band
stayed till the end to play.
Then she rolled – fifteen hundred faced the grave
And the lifeboats rowed away.

Living Lives Apart

(Chorus)
You don’t know me
I don’t know you
We’re two strangers
Living worlds apart
Call me crazy
It won’t phase me
Just two strangers
living lives apart

In the morning
as I wake up next to you,
I wonder why I still deny
the dreams I hope to find

And in the evening
as I lie down next to you,
I wonder why I thought that time
could ever change your mind

In the stillness
As I cry a tear for you
I can’t begin to understand
What brought us to this end

And in the silence
As I lie there next to you
I wonder if the coming year
Will fall like winter rain

Guantanamo

The stars for my blanket
I lie here on the ground
The sun’s the only thing
Allowed to move around
I don’t cause no trouble
Don’t even make a sound
Could be years to go, Guantanamo
Few more years to go, Guantanamo

I fought for my country
I fought the infidel
I heard Allah calling
Like the ringing of a bell
But now I found Jesus
Right here in Christian hell
He loves me this I know, Guantanamo
Jesus loves me this I know, Guantanamo

The blue Caribbean
It soothes me in my rage
Its tropical breezes
Find me in my cage
An endless vacation
To pay the sinner’s wage
Everybody sing Swing Low, Guantanamo
A few more years to go, Guantanamo
Everybody sing Swing Low

Didn’t Come to Stay Long
©2007 Jim Johnson (ASCAP)

I won’t be here tomorrow - Don’t have a lot of time
I’ll only make a cameo - And just memorize my lines
Before evening falls upon me - And pins me to the ground
But I didn’t come to stay long anyhow

I crossed the streets of London town - Making near and wide
By oceans sounding endlessly - Roamed the countryside
Then that girl, she fell upon me - And left me upside down
Seems she didn’t come to stay long anyhow

Think what you will of me – Tomorrow I’ll be gone
And all I’ve left behind, are these simple lines I’ve drawn
In this song

We’ll both be gone tomorrow - With eon’s left in time
Children fill the empty space - And memorize their lines
Before evening falls upon them - And pins them to the ground
But they didn’t come to stay long anyhow
No, they didn’t come to stay long anyhow . . .

This Old Song
©2006 Stephen R Coffee (ASCAP)

This old road don’t seem to end
This old dog won’t hunt
My old gal’s gone completely round the bend
Maybe it’s time for me to punt
But there’s a halo round the moon tonight
It’s got me wondering what tomorrow’s gonna do

This old heart’s seen better days
This old gun won’t shoot
My get up and go has gone and made a getaway
Ought to give myself the boot
But there’s been lightening on the ridge tonight
And I hate to miss a good thunderstorm

(chorus)
When I’m feeling like the day’s too long, I’m too far gone
The night puts on a magic show right here in my front lawn
Like it’s telling me I’ve got to keep on keeping on
And I start singing this old song

I’m the straw that stirs the Milky Way
And I challenge any man to prove me wrong

These old bones make too much noise
This old guitar won’t tune
Some of the best of the good old boys
Are calling from the dark side of the moon
But there’s a firefly jamboree tonight
Old coyote’s gonna sing his lonesome blues

This old song don’t seem to end

Thank you for calling PizzaCo
I see 555-1210
Mr. Johnson, how are you today
Now if you’ll just confirm for me
Your Homeland Security ID
I’ll get your pizza started Yo
                        That’s what I’m saying

I see here that you often buy
Our extra Gordo Meaty Pie
Well here’s on offer from your HMO
The ChickaSoy low carb low fat’s
On two-for-one they tell us that
Your cholesterol’s been running awful high
                        Is this to go?

Now calm down, settle down
Welcome to the new century
You may as well get hip
To this new relationship
We’re your full-service pizza company

Your pizza’s cooking, come and get it
Bring cash though, you ain’t got no credit
In fact I see you’ve fallen on hard times
Something about child support
Yeah I’ve got your credit report
It’s all so we can serve you better
                        Oh now, don’t whine

Since you’re coming this-a-way
You might as well stop in and pay
That fine, you know those books are overdue
You’ve also got some movies out
“Babes gone wild” what’s that about?
We’re learning more about you every day
                        And you’re the dude

Now calm down, settle down
There’s no use to complain any more
We know what you do
And how you do it when you do it
You’d be amazed what we can sell that for

Your profile says you use Vitalis
Old Spice, Right Guard, Cialis
Guess you’ve got those Baby Boomer Blues
Well our PharmaSausage double decker
Will put the life back in your wife
Ask your doctor’s answering service if it’s
                        Right for you

Well I’m really not supposed to say
But the FBI and the CIA
Are keeping tabs on what you have for lunch
I’m not saying that you owe me
But terrorists don’t eat pepperoni
So I bet your going to be okay
                        That’s just a hunch

Now calm down, settle down
You shouldn’t talk like that on the phone
You don’t want to go back in
For anger management
So goodbye 555-1210

And thank you for calling PizzaCo

When a Tree Falls
©2005 Jim Johnson (ASCAP)

It stood for a hundred years
Before the storm that brought it down
Another oak in the forest
That grew on the edge of town

With branches wide and roots grown deep
It was sturdy from the start
But the clouds rolled in - and the lightning struck
And split it through the heart

She walked into the kitchen
Where He sat with the morning news
She said “Hey, we need to talk”
And then she told him they were through

And the breakfast fell in silence
The teapot screamed in turn
Then the paper folded gently
While the toast began to burn

(chorus)
When a tree falls in the forest
And there’s not a soul around
Will you feel the blow from the impact?
Will you hear any trace of the sound?
When love’s gone in a moment
And the bonds have all come apart
Will you feel the blow from the impact?
Or hear the sound of a broken heart?

Walking through deserted woods
He felt his hands were turning cold
Grey sky hid the sun
Made him feel like he was old

He came upon a fallen oak
Down from a fatal storm
Roots exposed - bark stripped free
Heartwood split and torn

Then he fumbled from his pocket
And it flashed in the light of day
And it cracked the sound of the stillness
The echo’s faded away

Now on the floor of the forest
Brothers rest on the morn’
Opened up and set free
Hearts all split and torn

Where You Going With My Heart?
©2007 Stephen R Coffee (ASCAP)

Where you going with my heart
I don’t think we said Goodbye
Can’t you look me in the eye

It was broken from the start
There was nothing you could do
It’s enough you wanted to

Where you going with my heart

Was it me who was leaving
Did I tear us apart
But you kept on breathing
Where you going with my heart

See the love come rushing out
See it running down my chest
Like a thousand sins confessed

From the undertow of doubt
I could never reach your shore
And you can’t hear me anymore

See the love come rushing out

You’ve gone far on down the road
But I still see you standing there
Catching teardrops in your hair

Shouldering your heavy load
Well here’s your chance to put it down
You don’t have to haul it around

Where you going with my heart (put it down)
Where you going with my heart
Where you going

Now It Won’t Be Long
©2005 Jim Johnson (ASCAP)

There’s a chill as I hear the dark and icy knock upon my door
I hide in the shadow - so it looks like I don’t live here anymore
The hinges groan out wide - and in rolls, an awful mist of gray
A hooded silhouette in black –  bleached and boney fingers curl my way

(Chorus)
Leave my doorway – please sir be gone
It’s not time yet – Something’s wrong
Then thunder rolled
Now it won’t be long

Clearly some mistake was made – the keeper of your list must be at fault
For I am still young, you see - and don’t deserve this cruel assault
I appeal to you, kind sir - and your sense of all that’s good and fair
Leave me to embrace the sky and breathe the crystal air

Floating in the entrance - the figure turned and looked my way
In silence hovering there –as I searched for something more to say
Now many days are gone since then – but I remain to write this song
I had never noticed him before – but I believe he may have been there all along
